What to Know About Winter Tree Care

If you worry that your lawn and trees may need extra precautions for the chilly season, you’re on the right track! (because they definitely do). Our beloved green friends need extra winter tree care due to the plummeting temperatures, which can cause root and growth damage.

Avoiding Winter Drought and Frost Heaving

Fun fact: Even though it may be snowing, your plants still need extra watering. Plants and trees need extra water when mother nature doesn’t provide enough.

Water newly planted trees more frequently than dormant trees, and try to avoid getting water on foliage. Thoroughly hose around your trees to ensure all roots are drenched. Did you know that most tree roots spread as far away from the trunk as the tree is tall?

Once the temperatures drop below 28 degrees Fahrenheit, the tree cannot re-synthesize, leading to the inability of frozen roots to replace lost water. As a result, the tree will bleach or brown, a phenomenon known as “frost heaving.” Add extra mulch before the plant or tree is fully frozen to prevent this.

Now, during the chilly season, is the perfect time to take advantage of mulching benefits because it acts as a natural insulator and will also help avoid winter drought from the dry, frozen ground.

Winter Tree Care Pruning

In addition to routine pruning, you must give extra attention during the winter to prevent frozen branches and limbs from weighing down and breaking. This unexpected occurrence can cause serious harm to anyone underneath.

A simple preventative measure for this is regularly brushing snow and ice off the limbs within reach before fully freezing over. If your tree already has frozen branches that need removal, then take a step back and trust the professionals.
