Tree roots are the source of life for the beautiful trees in our yards. Not only do they provide the essential nutrients to ensure healthy growth, but roots above ground gather at the base of the tree where it needs the most support. Also, did you know that tree roots can reach as far away from the trunk as the tree is tall? Despite all this people still kill tree roots and damage their trees.
Considering all this, expert arborist Glen Lamb and owner here at Lamb’s Tree & Plant Health Care advises highly against using chemicals to kill or remove unwanted tree roots. We approach these issues with the well-being of the tree’s growth and nutrient needs as the main priority.

Although it’s a common practice to cut off or poison tree roots to avoid underground plumbing interference or landscape damage this could lead to more trouble than it’s worth.
Such as:
Let’s talk about some alternatives which could avoid these issues.
Root Capping Using Root Barriers
Root capping is the process of cutting off the roots near a building that are not desired and installing a barrier to block regrowth in that area. This method is used to prevent the dry soil from crumbling causing differentiation which could lead to uneven sidewalks or foundations.
This all must be done by a professional arborist as it requires large equipment and special expertise.
Root Pruning
If possible, root pruning is a very reasonable option for dealing with hazardous or unsightly roots. However, it’s important to know that if too much of the root system is cut off or destroyed it will kill the tree entirely.
- If 20% of the root system is destroyed, injury will occur
- If 40% of the root system is lost, death will likely occur
Root pruning is also used to remove above ground roots in undesirable locations. Be sure to never cover the base roots of a tree because it will suffocate them.
“The tree needs all its roots to continue the cycle of healthy living” says Glen Lamb, expert arborist and owner here at Lamb’s Tree & Plant Health Care. When you call us we assure you that your trees will in great hands.
